Herbal Tea Blends for Weight Loss, Water Retention and Constipation

by Marija Matejic | Oct 14, 2026 | Natural Remedies & Recipes

Two cups of herbal tea with a teapot and fresh flowers on a white table

These four herbal tea blends come from traditional folk herbal medicine: a weight loss tea, a blend for removing excess fluid from the body, a blend for constipation and a simple onion tea. Each recipe includes exact amounts, preparation and how long to drink it.

Weight Loss Tea

Ingredients:

  • Flaxseed (Lini semen) – 100 g
  • Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare) – 100 g
  • Alder buckthorn (Rhamnus frangula) – 100 g
  • Chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla) – 50 g
  • Horsetail (Equisetum arvense) – 50 g
  • Dandelion (Taraxacum officinale) – 50 g
  • Meadowsweet (Filipendula ulmaria) – 50 g

Preparation: Mix all the herbs together. Pour 1 liter of boiling water over 4 tablespoons of the blend. Stir, cover and let it steep for 1 hour. Strain and drink it in small sips throughout the day.

How to use: Drink the tea for three weeks, then take a seven-day break. After the break, repeat the full course once more. While you are drinking the tea, it is best to eat 200 g of freshly grated celery root every day.

About Meadowsweet

Meadowsweet (Filipendula ulmaria) usually grows along rivers and streams, in soil that holds water. Its leaves look a little like fern leaves, and its tiny white flowers grow in clusters at the top of the stem. Meadowsweet contains salicylic compounds, which the digestive system converts into salicylic acid. That is why meadowsweet helps calm inflammation and ease pain.

Tea Blend for Removing Excess Fluid from the Body

Ingredients:

  • Cherry stems (Prunus avium) – 100 g
  • Horsetail (Equisetum arvense) – 50 g
  • Birch leaf (Betula alba) – 50 g
  • Corn silk (Zea mays) – 50 g

Preparation: Mix all the herbs together. Add 3 tablespoons of the blend to 3 cups (750 ml) of cold water and bring it to a boil. Simmer for 5 minutes, then take it off the heat. Cover and let it stand for half an hour. Strain and drink it in small sips throughout the day.

Tea Blend for Constipation

Ingredients:

  • Alder buckthorn (Rhamnus frangula) – 100 g
  • Caraway (Carum carvi) – 50 g
  • Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare) – 50 g
  • Flaxseed (Lini semen) – 100 g
  • Unhulled oats (Avena sativa) – 100 g

Preparation: Mix all the herbs together. Add 1 tablespoon of the blend to 1 cup (250 ml) of cold water and bring it to a boil. Simmer for 2 minutes, then take it off the heat. Cover and let it stand for 20 minutes. Strain and drink it after meals, two to three times a day.

How to use: Drink this blend every day for two weeks, then take a 7-day break. After the break, repeat the full cycle once more.

Onion Tea for Weight Loss

In folk medicine, this tea has an excellent reputation as a natural remedy for cleansing the body, flushing out excess water, and getting rid of cellulite and extra pounds.

Preparation: Peel two onions, put them in a pot and pour 1 liter of cold water over them. Bring to a boil, then lower the heat and simmer until the liquid is reduced by half. Take it off the stove and let it cool. Strain and drink it throughout the day.

The tea does not smell of onion, and it has a pleasant, sweet taste.

How to use: The onion tea course lasts one month. After that, take a ten-day break, then repeat the whole process. Onion tea is also very good for the respiratory system.
