Herbs for Joint Pain and Arthritis: Teas, Elixirs, Oils and a Healing Balm

by Marija Matejic | Oct 14, 2026 | Healing Protocols

Cup of rosemary tea with fresh rosemary sprigs

Arthritis is a condition popularly known as inflammation of the joints. Although the causes of this inflammation can vary greatly, it is most often osteoarthritis. Another common form of the disease is rheumatoid arthritis, a degenerative, progressive joint disease.

In the fight against joint pain, herbs can be valuable allies. Antioxidant herbs and herbs with anti-inflammatory effects are the most common ingredients of tea blends for this condition. If you suffer from arthritis, do not drink red wine, and avoid meat and saturated fats.

The remedies below are traditional recipes by Serbian herbalist Momčilo Antonijević.

Tea Blend for Joint Pain (Especially for Rheumatoid Arthritis)

  • Alder bark (Alnus glutinosa) – 300 g
  • White ash bark (Fraxinus excelsior) – 100 g
  • Goldenrod (Solidago virgaurea) – 100 g

Mix all the herbs, then pour 700 ml of cold water over four tablespoons of the mixture. When it comes to a boil, boil for 5 minutes, then leave to cool for half an hour. Strain and drink throughout the day in small sips.

Nettle Porridge for Joint Pain

Blanch two handfuls of fresh nettle for 5 minutes. Drain and chop. Do not throw away the water that remains – drink it. Sauté a small onion in a little oil, add the chopped nettle, stir and pour in 100 ml of low-fat yogurt. Let it cook for one minute, then add two cloves of garlic and salt lightly.

How to use: Eat this porridge at least three times a week.

Ginger Preserve for Joint Pain

Grate 200 g of fresh, well-washed ginger, pour a glass of fresh pineapple juice over it and cook over medium heat for 15 minutes. Toward the end of cooking, add a tablespoon of honey, stir and pour the hot mixture into a clean jar.

How to use: Eat one spoonful of this treat every day, in the morning and in the evening.

Elixir for Joint Pain

This elixir is warmly recommended for everyone who suffers from joint pain or arthritis. It is made in two variants – with turmeric or with rosemary.

  • 100 g of raisins
  • 20 g of dried ginger root (Zingiber officinale)
  • 2 red hot chili peppers (Capsicum)
  • 20 g of dried turmeric root (Curcuma longa) or 20 g of dried rosemary leaves (Rosmarinus officinalis)
  • 20 g of white mustard seeds (Sinapis alba)

Pour a liter of good-quality gin over all the ingredients, shake, and keep in a tightly closed jar in a warm place for two weeks. After that, strain.

How to use: Take one teaspoon with a little water three times a day. This elixir reduces pain very effectively.

Olive Leaf Brandy for Arthritis

Another effective remedy for arthritis is made by pouring a liter of strong fruit brandy over 100 g of dried olive leaves (Olea europaea). Close tightly and keep in a warm place for two weeks. Strain.

How to use: Drink one small glass a day.

Massage Oil for Joint Pain

Joint pain will quickly disappear after a massage with the following oil:

  • 250 ml of sesame oil
  • 2 ml of rosemary essential oil
  • 3 ml of eucalyptus essential oil
  • 2 ml of mint essential oil
  • 2 ml of pine essential oil

Mix all the ingredients and store in a bottle with a stopper in a cool, dark place. Massage the painful joints with this oil for five to ten minutes. Be sure to wash your hands well so the essential oils do not come into contact with your eyes.

Balm for Painful Joints

  • 200 ml of calendula oil
  • 10 g of beeswax
  • 30 drops of rosemary essential oil
  • 30 drops of juniper essential oil
  • 20 drops of black pepper essential oil

In a clean pot over a steam bath, warm the oil and melt the wax in it. Remove from the heat and stir for one minute. Add the essential oils, stir and pour into a dry jar that closes well. Leave to cool and set.

How to use: Use it to massage painful joints two to three times a day.
